Ideally situated for Pilgrimage and visits to Cathedrals, Churches and Monasteries in Burgundy The historic 350 year old Hotel Saint Louis in more than 2000 year old Autun is ideally situated for a Pilgrimage to the numerous romanesque Churches and Cathedrals in Burgundy. Day OneFirst of all there is the Cathedral Saint Lazare built in Autun in 1120 with its celebrated Tympanum and the adjacent Museum Rolin with its religious treasures since Roman Times.We visit the Bishop’s Palace in the centre of Autun and may even be granted an audience We also visit the Lycée Bonaparte founded in 1709 by the Jesuits, the Fountain of St. Lazare built in 1543, the Library with its 60,000 books from 1792, the Town Hall from 1832, the Italiante Theatre from 1884 and the monumental town walls and Roman remains including the Amphitheatre which in its time accommodated 20,000 spectators. Day TwoWe go to Nevers and admire the Cathedrale Saint-Cyr Sainte-Juliette from the VI Century, then we go to the Church Saint Pierre built by the Jesuits in 1612, from there we look at the imposing romanesque Church of Saint-Etienne from 10L97, the Chapel Saint-Gildard, the Church of Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay, the Church of Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes, the Monastery of the Carmelites from 1562 and the baroque Chapel Sainte-Marie built in 1610. Day ThreeWe visit the neo-gothic Cathedral Saint-Vincent constructed between the 11th and 16th century.The Arches are romanesque.We carry on to the Basilica Saint-Andoche in Saulieu which was erected on the spot where the Evangelist Saints Andoche and Thyrse were martyred.The sarcophacus of Saint Andoche has been reconstituted from fragments and is bedded in Carrara marble in the Chapel dating back to the II or III century. Days Four and Five and SixWe will visit Cathedrals and Churches in Berzé-la-Ville the Chapel of the Monks of Cluny from the 12th century ; in Bissy-la-Mâconnaise the romanesque Church of Saint-Cyr from the 12th century ; in Blanot the romanesque Church and Priory of the 11th century ; in Bonnay 2 romanesque Churches Bourg-Saint-Hippolyte and Bourg-de- Besanceuil from the 13th century ; in Burgy the romanesque Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste perched on a hill surrounded by vineyards from the 11th century ; in Bussières, the romanesque Church with the tomstone of Father Dumont tutor of Lamartine ; the romanesque Church in Chanes with its fresques ; in Chapaize the romanesque Church Bourg-Saint-Martin with its belltower of 35 metres high ; in Chapelle-de-Guinchay we visit the neo-gothic Church ; in Chardonnay amongst the vineyards the romanesque Church of the 12th century ; the Church from the 12th century in Chasselas, the romanesque Church in Clessé from the 11th century ; and In CLUNY we visit the world famous Benedictine Monastery founded in 910. In the middle ages itwas the most important monastic capital of the Christian world. In Chrèche-sur-Saone we visit the romanesque Church built in the 11th century which served as stopover for the pilgrims to Compostela ; in Laizé we admire the romanesque Church of Saint-Antoine from the 11th century ; in Leynes the Church built in the 16th century ; in Loché the romanesque Church from the 12th century ; in Lugny the Church from 1528 with its 12 statues of the Apostles ; in Montbellet the gothic Chapel Saint-Cathérine where Jacques de Nolay, the Grand Master of the Templars prayed ; In Peronne the romanesque Church Saint-Marie- Madelaine from the 11th and 12th century with oriental sculptures ; in Saint-Amour-Bellevue the romanesque Church of the 12th century with a statue of Saint-Amour the Roman Legionnaire who converted to Christianity and was canonised subsequently ; In Saint-Martin-Belle-Roche the romanesque Church from the 12th century ; in Saint- Maurice-de-Santonnay a 19th century Church with a tabernacle from the 16th century ; in Saint-Point the romanesque Church from the 12th century with the tomb of the French National Poet Lamartine who died on the 28th February 1869 ; in Saint-Vérand the Church from the 12th century with its gothic Chapel illuminated during the nights of summer ; in Sancé the romanesque Church Saint-Paul from the 12th century with its gothic chapel ; in Tournus the Monastery Saint-Philibert sanctuary and Masterpiece of Roman Art from the 10th and 11th century and Crypte from the 11th century ; in Uchizy the romanesque Church from the 11th century baptised by the Monks of Tournus ; in Verzé the Chapel of Saint-Criat ancient site of pilgrimage where sick children were cured. Day 7We visit the Cathedral in Sens with its 78 metre high belltower.This Cathedral is considered the prototype of the great gothic Cathedrals in Europe.We also visit the Epicopal Palace of the Bishop originating from the 13th century ; the Church Saint-Pierre-le-Rond also from the 13th century ; the Church Saint-Maurice from the 12th century ; the Abbey Saint Jean with its Chapel from 1111 ; the Basilic Saint-Savienien constructed on the tomb of the Apostle of the Senonais ; the Abbey Saint-Germain with its Carolingian Crypts and the Chapel des Visitandines founded by the Sculptor François Brochet with 80 Sculptures in Wood called the « Massacre of the Innocents ». Day 8The churches of Vézelay and Saint-Père-sous-Vézelay protected as patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO. In 1146 Saint Bernard preaches the second crusade ;Vézelay becomes one of the great pilgrimages which lead to Compostela ; today one of the most beautiful historic sites of France. Day 9The romanesque Basilica of Paray-le-Monial and the Cathedral Saint-Etienne de l’Auxerrois built in 1215 with its famous mural painting of « Christ on Horseback ». Day 10Before returning home we attend mass in the romanesque Cathedral of Autun.
